4 Signs it is Time for Suspension Repair

Your vehicle is made up of many different systems that work together to ensure your car remains safe, comfortable and reliable. One of those systems, the suspension, fills multiple roles at once. While many people associate the suspension as a comfort feature it really plays into the safety of your vehicle as well. One important task the suspension has is ensuring that all of your vehicle's tires remain on the ground all the time, regardless of the terrain and driving conditions, providing for full braking power at all times. If you ever suspect suspension because of one of the following signs of trouble or something else it is integral to get to the auto repair shop as soon as possible.

Rolling Sensation

One of the scarier signs of suspension issues is if you feel as if your car is going to rollover, spin out, or otherwise go out of control as you go around a corner. The problem here is usually with the anti-sway bar, which shifts the vehicle's center of gravity during cornering to prevent it from rolling.

One corner is low

Does it appear that one corner of your car is low but all the tires are properly inflated? This likely indicates that the struts of shocks have failed and collapsed on themselves in that one corner of the vehicle. Driving like this can cause control issues and lead to increased tire wear.

Oil on the struts

Hydraulic shocks use specialized oil to absorb the unevenness of the roadway. If the housing of the shocks crack it could allow the oil to leak out. If you're experiencing a bumpy ride rub a rag on your shocks and see if they are coated in oil. This could be an indication that it is time to replace them.

Bounce test

You can conduct a bounce test to check the health of your suspension. To do so simply press on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get it bouncing up and down. Once you stop pushing on the vehicle it should return to a stable state with three to four bounces, any more than that and it is likely due for repair.
