Why Will My Car Not Start?

There is a lot that goes into the starting of a vehicle. It seems easy, simply turning a key, but the process is really quite complex. By turning the key in the ignition an electrical pathway is created that sends power that was created by the alternator and stored in the battery to the starter motor that spins the flywheel to get the pistons pumping which then ignites the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. If any one of these parts fails (or one of several others) it will prevent the vehicle from starting. These are the most common causes of no start situations and the symptoms you may experience if this has occurred in your vehicle.

Bad Alternator

The alternator is what creates electrical power while the engine is running which is then stored in the battery. It is also responsible for operating various electrical components as the car runs. If the alternator is failing you may experience trouble using electrical accessories or your headlights may be very dim. If the alternator fails completely the battery will quickly die.

Faulty Starter

The starter motor is fed an electrical charge that causes it to actuate and spin a gear connected to the engine called the flywheel. Common signs the starter has failed is a clicking noise that occurs when you try to start the car, a buzzing sound or a strange rattling noise.

Failed Ignition Switch

The ignition switch is what begins the whole car starting process. If the switch has gone bad you will not experience any sort of action when the key is turned. Another sign of a bad switch is if it is hard or impossible to turn the key in the ignition.

Bad Fuel Pump

If the fuel pump fails the engine will continuously crank over and over without firing up. This pump is responsible for delivering gas from the fuel tank to the motor.

Dead Battery

Perhaps the most common cause of a vehicle not being able to start is a dead battery. Batteries can die if lights are left on or if the radio is played for too long while the vehicle is not running. However they also die because of age and need to be replaced on occasion.
